The Grey Singer (Crithagra leucopygius), also known as the White-Rumped Seedeater, Grey canary or White-Rumped Serin, is a species of finch in the Fringillidae family. It is found in Central African Republic, Chad, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gambia, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sudan and Uganda. Its natural habitat is dry savanna. The Grey singer was formerly placed in the genus Serinus but phylogenetic analysis using mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequences found that the genus was polyphyletic. The genus was therefore split and a number of species including the white-rumped seedeater were moved to the resurrected genus Crithagra Swainson 1827. The Grey Singer has one of the most melodious voices of all the finches available to aviculturists in Australasia. People hearing the songs from the Grey Singers for sale cannot believe that such a beautiful song could emanate from such an understated looking bird.

If there is no gender option listed for a bird on our website, that particular species is ‘monomorphic’, which means we’re unable to determine gender without purchasing DNA testing. DNA testing is an additional $149 per bird to guarantee preferred gender. DNA testing may add an additional 3-6 plus weeks to estimated delivery time to allow for gender results. See our FAQs for more info.

Temperament: Grey Singers are very territorial and they tend to be aggressive of their own species in the same cage. Can be aggressive during breeding.

Breeding: Grey Singers prefer a compact cup nest with plant stems, fibres, and leaf fragments.

Diet: Classic Finch Seed, Dried Egg Food, Millet, Mineral Grit, Australian Blend Goldenfeast. When breeding they will consume 8-12 mealworms a day but show little interest in live food when not breeding.
