Size: 5.5 inches in length

Temperament: They are on the timid side and should not be housed together with parakeets, lovebirds, or other parrots that tend to be more aggressive. They like to bathe daily and should be given water to do so. Providing a cage that is at least 24” wide by 18” deep by 24” high is suggested. These birds cannot exercise by climbing. They need to fly, and the cage needs to give them space to do that. They also enjoy perches and toys for amusement and fun. The crested Canaries, like all canaries, must be protected from mosquitoes, and ensure their perches are clean to avoid any foot problems.

Song/ Call: Even though the Crested Canary is a “type” canary bred for looks and not song, a single male kept as a pet will sing – and often they’ll sing very loudly and quite well. Males should be kept separately to ensure the highest quality and frequency of singing.

Breeding: Birds that express the beautiful crest are called the Crested Canaries, while birds that carry the gene for the crest but don’t have a crest themselves, are more properly called the Crest-bred Canary. To produce strong babies, if one parent is a Crested Canary, the other parent should always be a smooth-headed Crest-bred Canary. The crest-bred Canaries won’t have the crest but when they are paired with a crested mate, they will be able to produce healthy babies– some of them with fine crests. The gene that causes the crested mutation is dominant, but a double dose is lethal. When one gene is inherited, the bird is crested. If two genes are inherited, then the bird’s skull is deformed and the chick usually dies in shell.

Diet: The Crested Canary have been kept in captivity for hundreds of years, and they thrive on a relatively easy-to-provide seed-based diet. The primary foundation is a good quality Canary Seed formulated especially for pet canaries.
