The black-crowned waxbill (Estrilda nonnula) is a common species of estrildid finch found in western-central Africa. It has an estimated global extent of occurrence of 1,000,000 km. It is found in Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, The Democratic Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda. Black-crowned Waxbills for sale sport distinctive white underpants including the vents. It’s bill is red and black. Females have less red on the flanks and young birds are plain and dull compared to adults.

Sexing: Difficult to sex although the male has more red on the flanks than female. There is such a slight difference between male and female to guarantee gender visually.

Temperament: Black-crowned waxbills are a peaceful and active bird.
Breeding: Nest built of grass stems usually with a shortish entrance tube sloping down and lined with feathers, vegetable down and fine fibres. Both sexes share incubation by day. All calls are very soft and high pitched, the nest call being a faint soft twittering. Male may display holding a stem of grass and jerking the head upwards but female may display in similar manner, usually without the grass.
