Black Siskin finches for sale (Spinus atrata) are a species of South American Finch in the Fringillidae family. The Black Siskin Finch is found in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile and Peru. The natural habitats of the Black Siskin Finch are subtropical or tropical high-altitude shrub-land and subtropical or tropical high-altitude grassland. The Black Siskin is a bird of the high Andes Mountains in South America. Because the Black Siskin’s plumage shows best in flight, it would be a shame to house these birds in anything other than a long flight or aviary. As a bird of the Puna grassland, it may enjoy some access to sunlight but it should never be allowed to become severely overheated. Black Siskins are hardy and adjust well when kept in aviaries and not cages. Black Siskin Finches are one of the commonest Siskin species in captivity.

Sexing: The male Black Siskin Finch is mostly a glossy black color, with the exception of a band of yellow at the base of the primaries, and the base of the tail and the lower belly which are yellow. The female Black Siskins are similar, but the black part of the plumage is less glossy and more brownish.

Temperament: Black Siskins are not shy and can be found feeding on the ground, sometimes around villages or roads. The Black Siskin Finch is a good singer that gets along well with other pet finch species in a spacious planted aviary. However, watch out for seasonal aggression if you plan to breed these pet birds, as they may attack rivals of their own species.

Breeding: The Black Siskin Finch is fairly easy to breed. The Black Siskin breeds after the rainy season, when its favorite seeds are available. The male Black Siskin performs flight displays accompanied by songs. This Pet Finch species breed in colonies, but each pair has its own small territory and defends a small area around the nest.

DNA testing:

If there is no gender option listed for a bird on our website, that particular species is ‘monomorphic’, which means we’re unable to determine gender without purchasing DNA testing. DNA testing is an additional $149 per bird to guarantee preferred gender. DNA testing may add an additional 3-6 plus weeks to estimated delivery time to allow for gender results.
